Article By James W.
Brosnan, Scripps Howard News Service, October 1, 1999
Marine Maj. Gen. Randy
West defended the safety of the anthrax program. He said the
Pentagon was fighting critics who have flooded the Internet ''with
information that doesn't have to stand the test of legality,
and validity, and science, and medical responsibility.''He said
many troops have been ''misled.''
Quoted from USA Today article from February 2, 2000, "Anthrax
vaccines won't be stopped."
"It has the
immediate authenticity of truth because it looks so pretty on
that screen that people don't look behind it, "says John
Hamre, the deputy secretary of Defense. "There's an awful
lot of just absolute nothing but rumor mongering."

The current vaccine against
anthrax is unsatisfactory for several reasons. The vaccine is
composed of an undefined crude culture supernatant adsorbed to
aluminum hydroxide. There has been no quantification of the protective
antigen content of the vaccine or of any of the other constituents,
so the degree of purity is unknown. Standardization is determined
by an animal potency test. The undefined nature of the vaccine
and the presence of constituents that may be undesirable may
account for the level of reactogenicity observed. (p.636)
